I’ve done work that feels like living and I’ve done work that feels like dying. Clear on which I want, now I coach people on how to come alive in their own work. I know it’s possible because I’ve seen alchemy happen in the heat of the crucible. It looks like colleagues doing their best work, living their values, and creating impact at an epic scale. This alchemy is not just good for the individuals involved, it drives impact and revenue growth. That’s why companies hire me to help their leaders create this culture on their teams.
As an example, I’ll share the story of a man on the journey to make work with meaning. For years, leadership has been one of his closely held values. You can see it in the way he supports those around him, drives results, and creates the structures that help his peers thrive. The trick has been getting others to see it. In reality, the first person who needed to see it was himself.
Once he became aware of his strengths as a leader, he could own his narrative. Since then, he increased the visibility of his team’s results so that they shined and by extension he shined. Now his value of leadership is being honored and I can see in his face what it looks like to be alive in his work again. Taking these steps didn’t require joining a new company; sometimes the most rewarding and difficult work can be to make the changes in an otherwise good situation that allow us to thrive and live in alignment with our values.
